Off and running

Admin sounds as good as a category as anything. Windows, maybe.

Well, I'm off to a new start. I guess this blog will be about the trials and tribulations of a girl (or I guess I'm a woman now, since I'm over 21) who is teaching herself hardcode and softcode and everything in between.

I downloaded the win32 version of PennMUSH server. I have absolutely no clue what I'm doing. For example, yesterday I took up a good part of my morning trying to figure out the patches. I ended up downloading an unzipping program and a complier and ran the first of about 5-6 patches through them both. Well, it all ended with me getting fustrated and giving up. I figured that I'd just waiting for the next version of PennMUSH itself to be released. By the time patches are released for that, I should have figured out how to apply them. Or, I would have found my old computer, on which I plan on loading UNIX on.

Blah, blah, that's about it. Wish me luck, anyone who reads this. I need it - badly.

Ubasti, when you say

Ubasti, when you say compiler do you mean you followed this in Javelin's Guide:

Here's the quickstart version:
1. Win32 users should get and install the Cygnus gnu-win32 tools.
This provides a very good unix-like environment on your win32
system, including the free gcc compiler. Find the tools at
http://www.cygnus.com/misc/gnu-win32 and be sure you get the full
development kit and follow its installation instructions. Win32
users can build with gnu-win32 alone, or with gnu-win32 and
Microsoft Visual C++; the latter builds an executable that can be
used on systems that don't have gnu-win32. If you want to use
MSVC++, the command-line compiler "cl" should be in your path. Run
'bash' and perform all following steps from within a bash shell.

Wow, somehow I think I

Wow, somehow I think I skipped that step. Using the Cygnus tools may definately make my life a little easier.

What I did was fumble through the guide on the creator of MUSHClient's website. I should have taken a quick nap before starting because I think I slept through a few steps from his tutorial without noticing as well.

Anyway, I got some a bit of help and a tip to patch from M*U*S*H. Then I found another tutorial on upgrading on that same site, which mentioned using a compiler. So, I found and downloaded one.

Thanks for pointing that out to me, though.

Cygwin

I always build it on Windows using Cygwin myself, and never have any problems (well - there are some issues with 1.8.3p6, but p5 and all before it work fine). There's a CPO post from Javelin that explains everything you need perfectly (except in 1.8.3 it's ./configure rather than ./Configure -d now).

Good Luck

Good luck...

You know that you can pop in to M*U*S*H at nearly any hour of the day and get some kind of help, guidance, or even moral support in running your Penn. :)
