virtual private servers?

Submitted by boris on Fri, 2010-01-15 07:16

Hi community.

I currently manage and pay for 4 websites and one mush. I think I probably pay about $400.00 a year for all of these services combined.

I like these services because someone else takes care of support, security, and patching. I don't like these services because I lose some flexibility.

In the last year or so, virtual private servers have gained some traction - it looks like a year on a vps server with 512 RAM would cost me $240.00 (and my time). I liked the idea of dedicated servers, but they are waaaay out of my price range.

text file entries

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the text files [] to format the way I want them to the first time, and or are there any editors out there that would do this?

More Start up Questions!

Out of sight, out of mind is a complete understatement when it comes to talking about how I completely abandoned this project.

Anyway, I'm back and Rising Sun will be made! Anyway, I've been reading a few tips in another thread and I think I will take it slow. I have a bunch of write ups and help files that I wanted put on a wiki, but never did. So, I'm thinking is this a good idea:

Laws of online world design - what's your favorite?

An entry on Raph Koster's blog reminded me of his page of The Laws of Online World Design.

There is some very good and serious wisdom there for people starting new MUSHes. Go read it, and then, if you've got a second, reply here and tell us all which of these Laws you consider most important, striking, or otherwise which one most speaks to you as a musher or mush admin.

Laggy Penn?

This has been driving me nuts, hopefully someone knows what the deal is. I've noticed on some PennMUSH games, there's a slight delay between seeing an object's name and its description when looked at. There's just a slight pause, enough to make the title seem separate from the description. I've also noticed that this doesn't happen on M*U*S*H.

Trials and Tribulations on Starting a New MUSH

Greetings to the MUSH community. I just added Dissendium: A Harry Potter MUSH to the MUSH list some time ago. I started this project sometime back in March of 2007. It's been a year and then some, but we're finally close to the end. There were times I really thought we weren't going to make it, times when pulling the plug seemed a finer idea than pulling through. It was hard, but the end result has been more than satisfying. Here's a few tips if you're considering a game of your own.

Have Code, Will Travel

Synergy is progressing very well, the core chargen system is complete, basic equipment system complete, Combat is nearing completion, and a whole list of other goodies are in the works!

But the conundrum is I am suffering from Theme-Dysphoria... The original theme I had intended to use for the Synergy system to be built in is loosing its luster in my eyes. I have every intention of creating a popular and fun MUSH that people will enjoy playing on, but I am torn when it comes to theme.
